A recording would be good. Meanwhile - is this in the day or at night? Your description made me think of a Woodcock's call when roding (territorial flight), esp. with the pauses, but that would only be in the evening/night-time. There's a recording here: www.rspb.org.uk/.../woodcock

Listened to the recording - OK, it's definitely not a Woodcock! Not very clear but I think I can make out a high thin 'seeee' type call - is that it? If so it sounds like the alarm call of a small songbird, the kind they give when they see a bird of prey (rather than the louder more 'chattering' alarm call when the danger is something on the ground, like a cat, which they 'know' they can avoid). Some nice Robin and Blackbird song towards the end :)

I cannot find anything. I've looked at different alarm calls, but they don't seem to match.
Any other suggestions?
We have a large Red Kite community here. I wonder if it could be that?
Could be Greenfinch there is one on the rspb site but it wont play for me for some reason?
