Hi All,
No doubt about it, a Red Kite over Newstead Woods in Orpington, Sunday 24/4/11 pm.
Distinctive forked tail and barred wing - solitary and flying westward.
Anyone else observed?
Thoughts?
Ken
There has been a bit of an influx of Red Kites along the south coast over the weekend. We saw one in off the sea at Seaford Head on Sunday, while on Monday at Dungeness there were at least three overhead in the morning. Some of these have no doubt carried on heading north :)

Yes, confirmed by RSPB following a recent survey - it has gone public that the Red Kite is flourishing! Long may it be so!
I saw the M40 Kites from the back of a motorbike - so much more real than from the windscreen of a car!
Poetry helped me emerge from my Chrysalis - but my wings are still drying - so much more to learn.www.janscreativewriting.co.uk updated - with endangered animals category & new animal/birds illustrated poetry book!
Hi Aiki
Thanks for this. Confirms my sighting then I guess. Will keep an eye and keep everyone posted - any news on nesting sites "locally"?
And long in Kent too Calico!
Any news on nesting sites?

Hi Ken.
Saw one this evening tearing a bird apart on my back lawn in the covert petts wood. Big bird - never seen a bird of prey like this here before. Fox jumped out at it and startled it into leaving its dinner for him to walk away with. Better than spring watch.
Hi Ken, have only just seen this post (brought to the front by Jafacake). I had no idea Red Kites were so close (I live in the south east and not a million miles from Orpington). I was astonished at TJs photos of them in his garden in Reading. Perhaps they will become a common sight here before long. I will have to keep my eyes open.....
bye for now
They've spread all over the UK from reintroduction sites, & following aiki's post, I bet there's two way traffic across the channel. Should strengthen the gene pool when they all mix together. Great news! My favourite BoP.

Seriously thinking about trying harder!
Yes I saw this bird on Sunday afternoon it was circling my garden I am on Crofton Road by Newstead Road. I thought it was eyeing up my tortoise. It swooped down probably after one of the birds in my garden but don't think it got any. I have a photo of it and you can see its distinct v tail
