It's well overdue for starting. This is the link to last years thread
Butterflies and Moths 2023
There haven't been a lot of butterflies around here this year so far. The earliest was a fresh Red Admiral on the 3rd of january
Since then I've seen a Speckled Wood & Peacock. There have been Brimstone's about but I haven't seen them. Plenty of time left in the year to go chasing butterflies.
Best wishes

A bit of a scruffy Meadow Brown I think. Light levels a bit low so a slower shutter speed was used. Hope the shakes do not show too badly.
So far all my pictures on the forum this year have been taken from my garden. I really have to get out more.
No, I couldn't make it out. I thought the Essex had a more distinctive black tip to the antenna, like it has been dipped in paint. I will label it as a skipper for now...
Looks sharp enough to me Ed. It might be a bit scruffy, but it's better than what I'm seeing. I might have seen 1 Meadow Brown this year, if that ... .
I would be happy to record that as an Essex the antenna shape is correct and although there is not a clear 'dip line' the tip is black all around

Thanks Germain, I wish they would stick to the rules
Oh just wait - given the funny temperatures we've had there may be all sorts of odd aberrations appearing at some stage

I think they are going to start learning to fly in raincoats around here ...
I'm going for both Green Veined Whites - so that I can be wrong twice ... . They were two different flutterbies taken in different places ...
Nothing wrong with that id BD - really pleased it doesn't need a rain coat today
Nice photo's BD
