This Moorhen started visiting about 10 days ago, we do have a pond but not large enough to support it or any possible future family. Although we have had Mallards, Heron & Kingfisher visit and to be honest I don't want ducks etc as we have great population of various newts living happily in the pond. The nearest river, The Glem is about 600 mtrs down the road and its a stream not a river so I assume its from next door who do have a much larger pond.

There's a very good chance frozen ponds nearby will have encouraged the moorhen to wander off and seek out new food sources.
My local reserve has a similar scenario, after the recent freeze, where moorhens have taken residence on the small pond outside the cafe.
