After yet another successful year on the Odds & Sods thread, initially started I think by Hazy, it might be wise to kickstart the 2023 thread off.
Thank you to those who have contributed to last years thread, and there has been very interesting odds and sods in "Odds & Sods 2022" that aren't enough to place into a dedicated thread, which you can look back on the following link:

What better for me, and as yet, I've not ventured far, ewe know what I mean, with this lassie on Baddesley Clinton estate yesterday....

I thought it was going to end up like this one
Either I'm beginning to beat my Canon R7 into submission or I'm getting used to its foibles. My biggest bugbear is being able to get the whole shebang to focus on a small object. One aspect of this is to actually aim in the right place - which I've more-or-less sorted. Thus, I was lucky enough to encounter this dragonfly, willing to pose for me both closely and against a plan background; occasionally.
This is how close the beastie was too me. The original, uncropped photo. OK, lens was at 600mm, but the dragonfly, head on, is a small target. The Canon R7's did well considering the reeds behind the beastie. Though, because I moved about 1/2mm or so, the R7 then decided to focus on said reeds.
The dragonfly flitted about, saw off interlopers, and took the odd rest.
One aspect of mirrorless I've come across on t'internet is 'Rolling Shutter'. Given how fast a dragonfly's wings beat, I can't say I see any warped wings which are said to be a characteristic of rolling shutter. Or perhaps the wings are slightly warped. I am using full Electronic shutter, though my camera still goes 'click' (very quietly), otherwise I can't tell if I've taking a photo or not.
I managed a sequence where it hovered briefly.
I do forget I can keep the shutter depressed and it will take photos continuously.
I was nearing the MGLG car park, when this couple landed in front of me.
A great day for dragonfly photography, but not much else. I am surprised that there are still so many dragonflies around. I guess the unusually warm spell we've had must be the cause - and it is set to continue into next week.
90% luck, 5% field craft, 5% camera skills.
