I had seen jays but never heard their calls!
Walking through local patch there was this awful sound, first I thought someone was in distress, but it didn't sound human. I used Merlin app which ID'd the jay, but I wondered about this. I followed the sound and yes suddenly it came out of the shrubs screeching hysterically and flew off. It was indeed a jay. The sun was out and I enjoyed watching the reflections of its brightly coloured plumage. I managed to track it for a while and it continued screeching intermittently until I lost it among the trees.
I'll never forget that sound. Any other such awful sounds from beautiful looking birds I should be aware of?

None of the corvid family are particularly blessed in the singing department, I don't think. Not a bird story, but at Arne the rutting deer make an awful racket!
