Tried to find a thread for this years young so if there is one please point me in the right direction and I'll delete this one ! Last years thread for 2021 HERE

The Moorhen pair on our water garden now have hatchlings !

and just taken to the water for first time - or three of them did Difficult to get photos as I had to lean right over the balcony 3 floors up. !!

and one unhatched egg ....

both parents doing a sterling job

Thanks Linda. They do look very different. I wonder whether the one I saw was poorly in some way. It looked very bedraggled and didn't seem terribly steady when it moved. I assumed it was because it had just fledged but perhaps there is a less positive reason for it.

Not aproblem DB...perhaps the wee guy is just exhausted with try tonfeed all his wains...a would rather think that than him being sick ;-)

Hi,
I’m not sure if anyone knows but have had black birds nesting in my garden and the eggs hatched i believe yesterday or the day before I’ve gone to check the nest today and it’s completely empty? Do you think its because I’ve been checking on the nest or is there chance something has eaten them?

So sad to hear that , cat, fox, squirrels or Corvids could have taken the chicks but human intervention does not help either...always observe from a safe distance or the parents could easily become frightened and abandon a nest.

Here is my contribution to this topic. Taken at RSPB Frampton Marsh on 14-06-2022. Avocet chick I think. I was some distance away and had to heavily crop the photo so sorry for the quality.
