A good spot! Obviously, couldn't find any picnickers with fizzy sugar drinks!

Trying to take a photo of a moth the other day, which was running all around the top of the trap & a Hornet looked over the edge to see what was going on, the beetle was just dozing.

Great pic Hazel, three for the price of one;   the Hornet looks pretty scary !

Hi Wendy, missed your reply, sorry! Yes that is the conclusion I came to as well, I'm happy the mystery is solved! From what I gather, large yellow underwing will lay on just about anything, including walls, so I doubt the verbena bonariensis was a larval food plant, rather a convenient launch pad.

Quite right jps, even in the egg boxes in moth trap & my shed roof! Lol

IWOOT, took me a couple of mins to work that one out, its late. I might look into those as well neat and good pics.
