Butterflies & Moths 2020

Hi All, I took an executive decision & decided to amalgamate the Butterfly & Moth threads which may make it easier to find if it's used more!

These are the old threads from 2019 Beautiful butterflies https://community.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/f/all-creatures/200195/beautiful-butterflies-2019#pifragment-4285=1

& Mostly Moths https://community.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/f/all-creatures/198118/mostly-moths-2019/1273216#pifragment-4285=1

To start us off here are a few from the recent traps & wine rope,

this is a lovely Satelite from the 8th january

Best wishes

  • Nice one - I think it will be a while before I see anything to put on here!

  • I had to dash off to do dinner so here are a few more early moths

I did a trap on New Years eve, so this was the first of the year, a Pearly Underwing

another from the 8th, a Buttoned Snout

    & a Many-lined from this morning

11 species so far this year, so a good start, but it's been quite mild, even been out digging weeds from the veggie plot.

  • Look what I got for my birthday - my dear friends who clubbed together to get it for me were slightly puzzled by my choice of gift. I just need the weather to improve

  • Wow, what a great pressie! Will you be doing it from your garden? I put mine under a table if I think it might rain but rule of thumb says it needs to be warmer than 7°C to get many moths. We'll look forward to your piccies & how the trap works!
Have you tried the rope trick? Thats good for this time of year, you just have to keep popping out to look at it.i

  • Grand start H, puts me to shame somewhat as not begun yet due to cold/wet/windy weather & see it's going to dip low at night again here til at least end of month!
Great present C, .. I see you've been suffering similar weather to me!

  • I don't fancy it's chances of surviving the gales and deluges of rain we keep having so I will be patient. I've wanted to survey the garden for a long time. I've tried sugaring and wine ropes in the past but wasn't terribly successful probably due to weather more than anything else

  • I must admit I don't put the traps out in the wind (or heavy rain), the moths don't like it either. I just use the table if there is a risk of a light shower. It's my best ever start to the year & today was like march, sunny & 16°C. Rain & wind coming in tonight though.
