All about Insects 2019

They look a bit like a species similar to St. Mark's fly, I think.

I must have forgot to put these up from end of August. You know when you're walking in the woods and you get loads of little gems hovering in the dappled sunlight.

I forgot to get an ID photo so I'm not sure which species of hoverfly they are. One of the Syrphini I imagine.

I don't normally see many Shieldbugs, but found loads all in one place the other day. An adult Hairy Shieldbug next to a nymph of a Common Green.

This is another nymph Shieldbug and might also be a Common Green ... maybe.

Lovely light on the flight shots Nige, and astonishing detail on the shieldbugs...who'd of thunk it!

Shiny Flies in Swanage

1st Shieldbug I recall seeing, flew into the inside of French door whilst it was open..... made a THUD, so it was certainly motoring!

You're lucky it landed the right way up. Half the time they don't even manage that and, if they fall to a hard surface, it takes them 10 minutes of noisily flapping about trying to turn themselves over. Possibly one of the clumsiest insects there is!! 

Hi, found this Hornet Mimic Hoverfly on the damp grass this morning, about an inch long

I should have picked it up using a green leaf to show its spread wings more clearly! It flew off after this scap.

An excellent find.
It's a rule of thumb for hoverflies that if the two eyes are touching then it is male and if they are separate then it is female, so even in cases where you don't know the species you can still tell the gender.
