Kestrels in the Quarry 2019... Just in time for Xmas!!

Two New Year Wishes ... firstly that Mr K visits tomorrow to start our year off right!

... secondly that a beautiful female appears to sweep Mr K off his feet & into that nest hole!

Thanks for all your support & encouragement during this past year ... 2018 thread here ...  https://community.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/f/all-creatures/196252/kestrels-in-the-quarry-201

  • Thanks Wendy, that's a lovely pic of the Kestrel, and maybe the white under the wing is what I had seen, will return later, trying to post a video to NZ which is taking ages, can't resize apparently.

    Lot to learn

  • According to the author of H is for Hawk, when naming birds for falconry it is best to choose something which does not imply fierceness (my word as I've forgotten her exact word!), namely not anything like Killer, etc.. She named her first Goshawk Mabel. Hence, perhaps name your Kestrel, Wendy, something fairly mild and friendly, nothing macho or aggressive, possibly something on the order of Cecil (Ces the Kes or Cez the Kez?--lol!).

    Kind regards, Ann

  • I have decided on Colin Ann, sounds gentle enough!

  • Well where has Colin been these last few days then!?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Search me CL, a law unto himself that one! Lol

  • Yep, Wendy, Colin sounds civilised enough!

    Kind regards, Ann

  • Colin, that's a nice name. When we first came over to France (1993) some of our earliest friends were a lovely couple called Danny & Davina, who lived about 1/2hr away. They went back to the UK a couple of years later & left us a big hen they had bought at a market & a few old bantams they had been given. We'd never kept chickens but dutifully accepted the gift & renovated the old chicken house on the end of our barns. For the bantams it was a move too many & they keeled over & died within a few weeks. The big new chicken turned out to be a cockerel!! So we bought 2 hens of the same race. We decided to name them, & they became Danny, Davina & Danielle (their daughter). Danny was a rather vicious cockerel & ended up as Xmas dinner at our neighbours & we joined in the feast. We bought 2 new hens 2 years later & they became Edwina & Emily. Of course when the time came, Edwina made a lovely curry. After that we had Fabienne & Florence after the weather forecasters on French telly. Then we gave up! Anyway, after that long story, you'll have to think of a name beginning with C for Mrs K!!

    Best wishes

  • Great story H ... how about Carlotta, sounds suitably seductive, which I hope she will be ... if ever!

  • Wendy had a Kesterel, Mr K was his name
On the community forum he found his fame
Into the hole in the quarry face he sat
"I will post another picture of that"

On top of Tower Restaurant he ate his dinner
My he really was a winner
Fur and gore gone, he left not a trace
A ceremonial poop and a clean to the face

As the last months have past, he visited not a lot
Then one day another we sought
Is this Mr K or a new fellow we have
Whoever it is, we all will love

If not Mr K a new name we must find
We really have to be very kind
Colin, says Wendy, I think that will do
For the fellow we think, that has come, is new

Now the next dilemma that has to be found
Is a name for his Lady friend when she comes around
Carlotta, I think would suit to a tee
Yes, decision made, that will do me

So we will have to sit and wait for another day
To see who comes to visit and stay
Is it Mr K, Colin or Carlotta we will guess
One thing is for sure, they will bring plenty stress

Later on in the year hopefully little ones will come
Carlotta being a really good mum
The dad, we will guess, was it Colin or Mr K
Well, we really will not be able to say

One thing is certain, of that I am sure
The quarry and Restaraunt will sure be a lure
Whoever comes back, be it she or a he
The photos and videos from Wendy we will see

Well I guess it will have to be Colin and Carlotta now!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Excellent work CL, how clever you are!
