I thought I'd start a new thread for 2017 & THIS is a link to the previous thread. To newcomers, all are welcome & you can post your moths, identified or not, on here. Any items related to moths too & of course caterpillars (all contributions of caterpillars welcomed by Wendy who is their substitute mum!)
Here are my first of the year, one from yesterday morning on the door, White-speck,
Which encouraged me to do a trap under the garden table & the White-speck came back along with a Black-spotted Chestnut
Unfortunately they were both dead, no sign of the spider, but it may be living under the garden table. Ah well, I suppose we all have to eat! I don't think I'll be doing another one for a while, this is just 2 or 3 warm days before it gets cold again.
Best wishes
Hazel in Southwest France
Looks like a funny coloured Brimstone! Lol!

Better than I managed last night though ... solitary Lacewing which doesn't even belong on this thread!

Yep, that's the one! lol
Thanks Wendy :)
Well 'tomorrow' never comes, but better late than never are a few of my recent moths, a new one for me, Orange Underwing,
& Pebble prominent
Off to another spot & got a Purple Thorn, new for me & then had several times so must be a good year for them,
an uncommon Water carpet
& another new one for me a Scarce Chocolate tip
& an Emperer moth
there were 34 species in all in the evening, but I'd put the small trap in another spot in the woods & guess what? They are like London buses, none in 3 years & then twice in a week, anther Tau emperor,
& a rarely seen Chesias isabella
& this week a very poor return of 6 species in an all-night trap about 10km away but one was new, a fabulous coat of many colours for this micro moth "Phtheochroa rugosana"
Hopefully with temperatures going up there will be a few more around soon.
wonderful additions Hazel, such beautiful markings on them

Fabulous H, lucky you ... envious me!!
No idea of the type.!! Very small, 1cm(ish) in length. Spotted at the coast today and very difficult to find at 400mm. Perhaps it's coming to that time again when I need to start taking the macro lens with me.!! :-)
My bird photos HERE
It's a day-flying "Pyrausta despicata" Paul, they come to the trap but are often seen in fields. Good photo with the 400mm but they don't always let you get close enough with the macro lens!
Thanks, Hazel. Believe it or not I had actually thought it may have been a Straw-barred pearl but I'd read the information wrong in regards to the moth's range. Must try harder. :-)
Very funny Paul, my book didn't show an English name but when I binged "Straw barred Pearl" it came up with my latin name of "Pyrausta despicata"!! LOL
I have a new incumbent ... Lesser Yellow Underwing larva (verified by Steve Ogden) ... a chance find as I relocated a Fuschia (which I thought dead but wasn't) & this was at the base ... vid (inevitable) to follow
Gone to ground now in special home ... aren't I the lucky one ... 3-6 weeks incubation!
This vid shows that he's a speedy little mover ...
Plus my little Carnation Moth?? found in garden yesterday ...
