I've never seen this before... Love animals in general and taking photos as an amateur... today I came across 3 goldfinches on a fence, very tame, maybe 20 or so feet in front of me. Took a photo and then all of a sudden they all came out of hiding from the long grass below the fence.... 30 or more goldfinches right in front of my nose....
Nice mixture of adults and quite a lot of youngsters. I expect they were enjoying the thistle seeds. Nice photo.

Someone said they would be getting ready to migrate... hence the flocking.... I have no idea...
It's possible. The RSPB estimate that about two thirds of the breeding population migrate as far south as Spain. I still see plenty in the garden through the winter.
Thanks for the information... I was amazed by them and the fact they were so close... also that most were hidden in the grass... then they flew off after 10 minutes up and down from the field on to the fence....
Great shot of a beautiful bird, well done.

That is a lovely photo and so many in one spot.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Lovely photo, Bob. We were at RSPB Pulborough Brooks a couple of weeks ago and there were several flocks of Goldfinches, probably 20 or 30 in each, gathered on the thistles and hedgerow bushes.
Kind regards, Ann
Lovely to see so many so close up Bob, I have seen loads of thistles in the fields this year but haven't been lucky enough to see that many goldies.
Lot to learn
