Hi everyone, i was out walking on the macclesfield canal yesterday 1-6-10, i am a amateur photographer and i love taking wildlife images especially Macro photography so i always have my camera with me.
On the opposite bank, to my surprise, stood a heron so i started taking images of it (i love herons and have been watching them at the heronry at macclesfield forest) i was watching this heron for about 30 minutes and it started to move about and stretch its neck as if it was looking for something then it started to fly around and then to my surprise it started to attack the moorhens and all hell was let loose and then it snatched one of the moorhen chicks and ate it.
this was amazing to witness, has anyone ever seen anything like this, i thought herons only ate fish.
i have all this on digital images and i will post some of them on the gallery once i know how, i am new to this site but i am a rspb member.
Birds are not shy, they just like to make photographers look dumb.
Hi Macro,
I don't know about the diet of Herons I'm afraid, but just wanted to welcome you to the forums. Look forward to seeing pictures. There have been problems with the gallery on this sight, it goes very slowly, however you can upload pics into your forum post by clicking on the filmstrip at the top of the text box.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

Hi,
herons will eat a variety of prey, fish, frogs, eels and smaller birds including water rails and small mammals up to rabbits.

Hi Macro and welcome to the fourms
Aye Herons will eat almost anything they can fit in there mouths.
I have seen them eat rabbits Mice and birds.
Thay is why they get mobbed by other birds when they are at the river .
Cheers

If its no fun Yer no doin it right!
Hi Macro
Yes, they will eat most things. I saw our local Heron stalking and then snatching a duckling off the canal. I still find them amazing birds though, very beautiful and graceful. Thugs in Prada . LOL

It must have been a real delight to witness such a wonderful display at close quartes.

Hi Macro and welcome to the RSPB Froum and enjoy yourself here
Grey herons look so sweet and innocent standing hunched up in their corner of the river. They stand for hours motionless doing nothing......then a different bird shows itself at feeding time
When they are on the hunt for food that is a different thing all together...that bill is formidable to all of their prey.
Never seen them eat a bird at all, but now I am aware I will be on the look out.
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Hi Macro and welcome to the forum. Looking forward to your pics. They sound as though they will be very interesting. (click on the green icon as Bramble suggested)
Cheers, Linda.

Hi Sarah, i have tried to upload the images via the filmstrip and the gallery but both times it has come up with ERROR saying that the images are too big, i am shooting in JPEG fine and they are under the 4mg allowed, have you any idea why they are not uploading, i have chosen quite a few images to put on to let people see the action as it happened.
sorry if i am being a pain, phil
