All about Insects (2015 to March 2017)

Oh well, no sooner said than done. All you budding entomologists or photographers or anyone who likes nature, you can put your insect photos here!

I'll kick off with a few that I've had lately. This first is called a Mantis Fly & is a cross between a Fly & Mantis (funnily enough) & is in the Neuroptera family, which is a mixed bunch anyway, my first & I had 3 of them around the moth trap

& a Rhinocerus Beetle which was also attracted to the light & are quite rare now around here, he really was fabulous, very impressive,

& this Frelon was also in the moth trap, but seemed quite docile as long as I kept my distance!

& some Damsel flies, an Azure Damselfly (thanks for the ID Aiki)

a Large Red Damsel

& from early may a proper fly from the Dipteras, anyone know the English name, I think it's latin name is Otites lamed,

I usually only take photos of flies with interesting wings as I am hopeless at identiying them!

Thanks for looking & maybe you can post some of yours!!

Best wishes

  • Not a good year for the local honey bees, here,Wendy. Depressing.I might throw myself onto my Dagger     - fly.

  • Try this EB, might work faster than being stabbed to death by that fly

Plenty of bumbles all over the Buddleia but not too many of smaller ones either ... where are they all?

Also had more bee deaths in last week ... four already!  And this poor Bee who suddenly dropped from height of Buddleia & then couldn't fly, walked all over garden for a couple of hours & seems that one of it's wings was damaged or not dried out properly ... last seen climbing up trellis to roses

  • Tina & Vanessa obviously sweet on you EB!

Varroa mite is a great problem, getting resistant to insecticides, spread worldwide except Australia & attacking Honey Bees!

  • Another few from me although I've no idea what most of them are.!!

This small Beetle was surveying his Kingdom from the comfort of his Buttercup.

Perhaps some type of Soldier Beetle?

This is the first time I can remember of ever seeing a Shield Bug. The markings remind me of King Tutankhamun’s funeral mask, so I was calling it ‘Toots’ as I was taking the photo.!! :-)

  • Such amazing detail PA, is your soldier beetle missing an antenna?  Shield Bug is exactly the colour of the shoes I'm looking to buy to protect my 'tootsies!'

  • Thanks Wendy, I'm sure your tootsies will be well looked after in a lovely new pair of shoes in that particular colour scheme. The Soldier Beetle's other thingy is actually pointing straight towards us and is out of focus due to the shallow depth of field (fancy photographic statement) :-)  ..... We once booked a taxi to take us out for the evening; it turned out that the taxi driver was Egyptian. In case we weren't quite ready when he arrived, we left instructions to Toot and come in.!! ...... I know....apologies in advance.!! :-)

  • Ha Ha the old ones are always the best!

The middle bug certainly looks like a Soldier beetle, they are all lovely photos with great detail. The colour around the edge of the Shield bug is amazing, you'd never see that just looking at it would you. Keep up the good work!
