Flying barn owl by John BridgesThis is a great time of year to see and hear owls. You've got a good chance of seeing owls on many of our reserves - check out this list to see if there's a good place near you.

If you live near Saltholme reserve (close to Stockton), you can drop into their owl watch between 11am and 2pm on Saturday and Sunday to see their seven snoozing long-eared owls. Best to ring Saltholme before you go just in case the owls aren't doing their thing!

Whilst we're on the subject of owls, have you ever wondered if they are waterproof? No, neither have I - but just in case you have (and you want to know now, don't you?) then we have the answer.

You can find out about the owl family and play their calls on our website.

Barn owls suffered badly in the recent snow as they struggled to find any voles or mice to eat. You can do your bit for owls by putting up a nestbox. If you do it by November, you could get tenants next winter.

Finally, if you're entertaining children this weekend, here's a fun colouring-in activity to make a wide awake and sleepy owl. If you don't get the chance to see any snoozing owls at Saltholme, you can at least make your own to enjoy at home!
