Salisbury based knitting group Knit ‘n’ Knatter have teamed up with the RSPB Stone-curlew Recovery Project to create what we believe to be the first ever knitted Stone-curlew!
This stunning bird was created by several members of the knitting group getting together to adapt a pattern originally for a pigeon (!) and sharing out the parts before stitching together to produce the unique end product. We just love him.
Numbers of this vulnerable chalk grassland bird are steadily rising in Wiltshire, thanks to the hard work of the project team and now we have a new bird in our midst; meet Rocky the Stone-curlew.
Rocky already has his diary filling up with social events to attend and will be the RSPB team mascot for the time being. Eventually, once he has helped us raise a lot of support and awareness we expect to auction him off and raise funds for the project.
Huge thanks go to Knit ‘n’ Knatter who meet once a fortnight in Salisbury Playhouse, and in the Pheasant pub on alternate Tuesday evenings; in association with Born to Knit shop which is on the first floor at Fisherton Mill and stocks quality hand knitting yarns made from natural fibres, and also runs a wide variety of knitting and crochet workshops.
Our Stone-curlew safaris being run on the reserve are now nearly full, but we still have a few spaces on Saturday 6th September. To book your place or find out more about the project please contact Lindsey on lindsey.death@rspb.org.uk, or call 07834792857.
