September continues to be a good month to see our resident Kingfishers. They have been regularly visiting their perches and two were seen flying across the lake this morning. They are so close that we can take photos using the 360 degree screen in the Discovery Centre. Teal, Gadwall, Great Crested Grebes, Shoveler, Grey Herons and Little Egrets are also about. Though it's overcast today, butterflies and dragonflies have seen around the reserve.
The Hooded Merganser is also back looking very smart after his summer moult. The "Hoodie" has spent most of the day with the Mallards and Tufted Ducks at the feeding platform.
This week RSPB and BTO volunteer, Steve Hales, has been out on the reserve ringing our Bearded Tits. Each bird has been ringed with an individual colour combination of rings. If you see any ringed Bearded Tits around the reserve or at Lodmoor, make a note of the colours and if you can take a photo and report your sighting to the Discovery Centre.
Now is the best time to see our Bearded Tits as it is when they start to erupt. If you are intrigued, then join one of our early morning guided walks with an expert to find out more.
