With June come and gone, can we really believe we are half way through the year?

Summer is in full swing at Radipole Lake and Lodmoor, with the vegetation growing quicker than the wardens can cut it down! They have been busy this month checking fence lines, gates and reserve paths, and cutting back swathes of vegetation growing up along the pathways. They of course, check for nesting birds before doing so. Possibly the most noticeable bit of work they have done, is cutting back the reeds in front of the Discovery Centre - which means the wonderful views from the floor-to-ceiling window can still be seen! They've also trimmed around the pond dipping area, so there's plenty of room for swishing of nets. Big thanks to the team for keeping the reserve looking wonderful.

Talking of pond dipping, children's activities have been in full swing this month. We hosted a school to come visit Radipole Lake on 22nd June and engaged the year 1 and Reception children in a spot of pond dipping, bug hunting and bird watching. They learnt how to use binoculars, about animal adaptations in a game involving 'wooly' worms, and learnt how to identify different pond minibeasts. We have 4 more school classes visiting Radipole Lake in the first week of July, where we will be doing more fun activities to help local young children learn about the nature on their doorstep. If you'd like your class to visit us, for a FREE school visit, please contact weymouth.reseves@rspb.org.uk.

In other news, the Dorset staff and volunteer team caught up with each other for a walk around Lodmoor on the 27th June. A highlight of the walk was seeing this brightly coloured Scarlet tiger moth.

It's been a fab month, let's wait to see what excitement July brings!
