July has brought sunshine and rain, but the Weymouth Wetlands reserves have been thriving whatever the weather.

Radipole Lake has been awash with dragonflies and butterflies on sunny days, particularly Common Darters and Southern Migrant Hawkers. Oystercatcher, Dunlin and Lapwing seen at Lodmoor too.

The wardens have been continuing their summer work plan of cutting back the ever-growing vegetation along the paths at Radipole, Lodmoor and Chafeys and have also completed some renovation work on the wooden sculptures on the Discovery Loop.

The end of July has seen the start of the Summer holidays – it’s been lovely to see families visiting our nature reserves for a slice of cake, a walk around and a splashing time pond dipping! The highlight of the month has been the Volunteer Celebration Event on 21st July. It was an afternoon to thank all current volunteers, celebrate those earning long service awards, and spread the word about volunteering with the RSPB. The Dorset Echo joined us and spoke with several of our current volunteers, learning what they do and why they enjoy volunteering and what keeps them coming back! Have a read of the whole article here: The RSPB have celebrated Weymouth volunteers and call out for more | Dorset Echo

Radipole Lake is looking for more volunteer helpers to chat with visitors inside the Discovery Centre. If this is something you think you could help us with, do get in touch by applying here: https://volunteer.rspb.org.uk/opportunities/45416-visitor-engagement-family-and-children-events-2023-03-24
