As alot of you might know, the RSPB is often mistaken for other similarly named organisations such as the RSPCA. This often means that we get phone calls telling us about baby birds brought in by the cat or gull chicks that have fallen off the roof. But a phone call this morning was going to prove to be a real cracker!

We got a phone call about a bird in someone’s attic, so we told them the usual stuff about how we are a conservation organisation and not a rescue charity. But we passed her details onto a local person who gives up her time to help injured wildlife. She was kind enough to go around to the couple’s house and was told where the bird was. As they approached the attic they heard the bird tweeting away. On closer inspection the tweeting appeared to be coming from a small round white piece of plastic that was attached to the ceiling! It was the fire alarm!!

I must point out again that if you find a baby bird or other injured wildlife, please get in touch with a local vet or the RSPCA who are equipped to deal with injured wildlife. Or if your smoke alarm is in need of help please contact a local electrician!
