It’s that time of year again when we all make sure our feeders are topped up and we pray that all the birds in the garden at the moment reappear for the biggest wildlife survey in the world in just over a week... It’s Big Garden Birdwatch!
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th January our annual Big Garden Birdwatch will take place and this year we hope it will be the biggest and best ever. It’s in its 35th year and to celebrate we are holding a special event at the Wild Weymouth Discovery Centre at Radipole Lake to help people in Weymouth and Portland do the survey back at home. Our event is on Saturday 25th and starts first thing in the morning with a bird ringing demonstration which will be up at the concrete bridge. We hope to be able to show you garden birds up close and tell you all the science behind bird ringing and why it’s important. This is weather dependant, wind and/or rain will mean we won’t be bird ringing I’m afraid, but fingers crossed for some decent weather!
Then from 10am we’ll have hourly guided walks (on the hour) until 2pm and these will focus on identifying your garden birds. The discovery centre will have activities such as bird feeder making and quizzes. Plus we’ll have experts on hand to tell you everything you need to know about taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch.
To register for the Birdwatch check out this link. https://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/ . Forms are also available from the discovery centre from now until the actual weekend. Enjoy!!
