August 27th – 31st

Hi everyone,

Ben here,

We made some more repairs on the Island Hide walls and windows this week. We are replacing the old chipboard walls, which are starting to rot and effect the operation of the windows, with new ply board. We have started on the right hand side of the hide and will be working our way across the walls throughout the following weeks.

More brushcutting this week. This week we cleared the East Trail around Patsy’s Pool. This should be the last cut for the year now we are into autumn and approaching winter. We will be doing this across the rest of the reserve and will also need to give the paths at Snettisham a final cut for the year. So expect some occasional light disturbance around both reserve over the next few weeks.

We fed the Turtle Doves again this week and they have been seen feeding on the seed we spread along the Tank Road this week. To view this area head to the end of the Fen Trail Board walk, past Fen Hide, turn left and look down the track past the no entry barrier. We also spread some seed at the end of the car park so do keep your eyes out around there as well and do let us know if you see any!

Moth Morning this week produced 52 different species out of total of 391 moths caught in the three traps. Some of the highlights this week were; Engrailed (2nd Generation), Red Underwing, Centre-Barred Sallow, Latticed Heath, Pale Mottled Willow, Small Square Spot, Square-Spotted Clay, Poplar Hawk-Moth and Dark Spectacle.
