Well both actually.
We have been lucky enough to have both snipe species on the reserve for the last week or so. The common snipe, or full snipe as it used to be known, is a regular bird at Titchwell Marsh and can be seen almost all year round. Numbers of these birds do increase during the winter and can often be seen from the hides on the fresh marsh.
The rarer Jack snipe or half snipe is an infrequent autumn/winter visitor and can be very difficult to see. Like the full snipe the half snipe has fantastic brown and gold plumage giving it perfect camouflage in reed covered vegetation.
The bird in the photo has been seen from the new Island hide at the reserve and has been providing excellent views, as this picture by local birder Ray Kimber demonstrates.
