The Big Freeze has ended (for now), so welcome in the Great Thaw of 2010.
You can bet that the birds and other wildlife at The Lodge will be mighty grateful of it, especially small, insect-eating birds like the firecrest that's been seen several times in the gardens in recent days.
It's been lurking in some of the bigger trees near the rhododendrons at the back of the garden, so it's well worth taking a close look at any goldcrests you see flitting around.
A few woodcocks have been spotted flying around at dusk, no doubt venturing out of their daytime roosts in the woods and off to a meadow to feed in the dark.
There has been a scattering of siskins and lesser redpolls, too, but it seems not to be a vintage year for them.
Just off the reserve, Biggleswade Common is slightly flooded and a male pintail was attracted down on Sunday! Watch out for the unexpected...
