As we headed off for our 'birds for beginners. walk we saw a flock of arond 50 crossbils on the new heath. What a start!
After a good stroll, we had cracking views of an adult tawny owl staring down at us from one of the large conifers near the hide.
It was my 4th bird survey this morning, I meet up with Graham the warden for a 6:30 start, in calm and fairly mid weather. We do one a fortnight from March until July.
Whitethroats and garden warblers have arrived since the previous survey, two cuckoo's were heard and a rather unusual sighting of 2 shelducks ,which seem to have taken up residence in the area, were flying around.
Other birds included treecreepr, nuthatch, coal tit, jay, sparrowhawk and kestrel.Butterflies were back on the wing and a lovely orange tip was floating around near the gardens.
