This morning at The Lodge, two male and two female crossbills landed in the same bare tree as we saw them in on Saturday, and were a great bonus for several birders here at the time. Along with the group were a couple who had never seen crossbills before, we were able to show them through the 'scope, just as the sun came out to show off the crossbills plumages plumages - a rich red of the male and green of the female. The four birds flew off together and were seen on a pine on the new heath, before disappearing towads the hillfort.
Later in the day, a nice flock of around 40 lesser redpolls were feeding in birches around the visitor car-park. Both of these birds were an addition to this week's Bedfordshire Bird Hunt, where the week total is now at 109 birds.
A very happy New Year to you all!
Mark and The Lodge team.
