That's the answer I have had to give to a number of telephone enquiries this week. The autumn starling roost at Strumpshaw Fen can be an amazing experience but is very unpredictable with fantastic displays in 2010 and 2011 but nothing last year. Why is a complete mystery, but this year we are still waiting to see if they will appear, The roost can develop anytime between mid October and christmas, so watch this space!
Out on the reserve all the expected species are around with a dozen or more marsh harriers, including at least 3 wing-tagged birds, and one or two hen harriers roosting. Bitterns have been very active today with some great views at fen and reception hides. Other seasonal specialities seen this week at Strumpshaw are jack snipe and water pipits. Nearby, a flock of up to 90 white-fronted geese have been commuting between Buckenham and Cantley Marshes and the regular wintering pair of peregrines are in residence.
With the weekend weather looking cool but dry, why not get your boots on and come out and discover some autumn wildlife.
