There have been two second brood swallowtails feeding on the buddleia next to reception this morning. Lots of people have been asking to be informed when they emerge, so... They have emerged! Today looks like a good day to come and see them as it is warm and sunny, something we have not had for a little while now. I find the second generation is good for those who didn't manage to catch up with them earlier in the year, but bad for the butterflies themselves This is mostly due to the fact that each one that emerges means one less first brood butterfly for the following year and it is the first brood that creates the larvae for the future, the second generation do not have enough time (or foodplant) to be useful in continuing the population unfortunately...as I said a mixed blessing!
