A very brief roundup today due to time pressures….

The cold weather may be approaching us in the coming week and looking at the movements of birds I believe the cold is on its way. The tell-tale signs of cold weather movements have been seen over the fen this morning; large flocks of woodpigeons and lapwings have been heading west, these species often gather together and move in groups away from the cold conditions.

A male hen harrier was seen on Tuesday evening along with 12 marsh harriers.

A bittern opposite reception hide in the cut plot was nice on Wednesday afternoon.

Bearded tits still present in small numbers throughout the fen.

Marsh harrier numbers increasing slowly and remaining at the fen throughout the day now.

Lots of buzzards pairing up and displaying over their territory.

Kingfishers being seen mostly on the riverbank.

Treecreepers singing in the woodland, in particular between the two pond dipping pools.

A pair of bullfinches are showing well between the carpark and Reception Hide.

Great-spotted woodpeckers are busy drumming and arguing over territories.

The cold weather predicted next week could see increases and decreases in various bird species, keep feeding your garden birds and remember to provide regular fresh water if freezing conditions prevail to help them through the cold period.
