This week it’s October half term so Laura is back with an update on what’s been happening at Strumpshaw Fen in the run up to Halloween. Take a minute to read about all the ghostly goings on in the Wild Woods - the place pixies, fairies and goblins call home.

It has been a busy few days at Strumpshaw Fen, this half term. We unveiled the Wild Woods Scavenger Hunt last Thursday and the event runs until Sunday 1st November. Families have been able to delve deep into the Wild Wood, collecting important treasures along the way. The question is, has your family visited the Wild Woods yet? There is still time to pop along and take part. What souvenirs will you be able to gather under the watchful eyes of the pixies and fairies but without the naughty goblins finding out?

It has been a delight to see so many little explorers enjoying the outdoors and we have all loved those of you who turned up in fancy dress! From fairies to zombies, we are loving your creative minds!

Out of all the fantastic outfits we have seen so far this half term, one enthusiastic little ‘Hermione’ reminded me of last years Wizard School. A huge success, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad that we haven’t been able to re-create the event again for this year. Unfortunately, we had to work with what we had, and Covid19 put a stop to all hands-on magical mischief! However, I am proud of the event we have been able to organise which I believe is both engaging and safe.

To be completely ‘hands-off’ a £2 trail sheet will be everything you need for a wild day out in the woods. By following the simple instructions, you can magic your trail sheet into a ‘treasure pouch’ – the perfect way to collect all the treasures you happen across in the Wild Woods.

Some treasures, like toadstools and fungi, cannot be collected in your treasure pouch, though we encourage photographs of your favourites. October half term is a brilliant time to see the amazing display of fungi which seems to pop up overnight and disappear in the same fashion. Strumpshaw’s Wild Woods are the perfect place for fungi – so don’t forget to look out for fungi and the other wildlife that calls the Woods their home.

For more information about this event, click here. Please follow government rules on social distancing and group size when doing this activity. Trail sheet price is in addition to usual entry charges. Track and trace will be required. Card payment preferred.
