This week sees Laura return to the important topic of giving nature a home throughout the UK and how the RSPB’s Revive Our World Campaign is helping to drive governmental change and help create solutions to the current climate and biodiversity crises.

Whether your back garden is large and teaming with wildlife, or whether you have no garden, there are ways that each and everyone of you can help to give nature a home. A great place to start is by hanging out some bird feeders – you can even buy ones that stick onto the outside of your window for those without garden space. Start by buying one or two bird feeders to fill with different seeds, and in no time at all you could be hosting your very own garden bird café with a wide selection of birdfeed for an amazing diversity of garden birds. Click here to start this journey today!

Only one of many great ways to help nature at home, creating a bird café is a perfect place to start. Other simple steps to help nature include planting a wildflower patch, growing a tree, creating a home for hedgehogs, building a bug hotel or bat box, digging a pond… and so much more! For even more ideas and how to get started click here. Out of the many native species facing decline in the UK, the iconic hedgehog is one of the worst hit. By creating a simple hedgehog-sized hole in your garden fences you can make the world of difference. See how many others have already created a hedgehog highway through their garden by looking at this incredible interactive map by Hedgehog Street.

Hopefully that has given you some idea on how each and every one of you can help the nature on your doorstep. But how can you help on a much larger scale? Here’s how. The 15th of September saw the launch of the RSPB Revive Our World campaign, which began with two weeks of sustained pressure on our government. The Revive Our World campaign creates a platform to highlight the climate and biodiversity issues this country is facing, to allow everyone to voice their concerns and share their outrage and to push the government into action.

The Aichi targets – 20 environmental and biodiversity targets - were set in 2010 with an aim for them to be met by 2020. The sad reality is that we have reached 2020 and the UK has met just three of those targets and has gone backwards in others. The Revive Our World campaign aims to shed light on this situation and provide real solutions to halt the rising biodiversity and climate crises. For more information on these proposed solutions please have a read of the Green Recovery Plan for England, here. Alternatively, this Facebook post from RSPB Love Nature breaks down the plan into 4 easy-to-read points.

RSPB Chief Executive Beccy Speight has rightfully said, “We now need people across the UK to stand up for nature, to let our politicians know this is not good enough and we demand they revive our world... We have to put our money where our mouth is and use the next decade to do something truly impressive.”

So what can you do? The first step is to sign the Revive our World petition, which you can do here. Join the 70,000+ members of the British public who have already made the decision to help revive our world. Signing the petition is only one of many ways you can help us make a difference. If this has struck a chord, why not become a Campaign Champion and make your voice count. With RSPB support and guidance, let’s help you fight for the issues you care about most.

There is so much more to come from the Revive Our World campaign, so please keep checking in with it as it progresses into the next year and beyond. And in the meantime, don’t forget to give nature a home where you are.
