Hi everyone,
How are you this fine morning? The sun is shining and the reserve looks lovely!
Just a quick blog to give you a little update -
I heard my first cuckoo of the year at Rye Meads yesterday! Very exciting, creatures are starting to arrive bak at Rye Meads... what will we see next?Cuckoos are great birds, do keep an ear out for the marvelous song of the male (I do like it when birds sing their own names, very helpful!). Did you know they are red listed birds?
The strange looking duck is still baffling people! A mystery duck has been hanging about - moving from the lagoons over to the Draper hide. We think its a Baikal teal hybrid... Here's a picture that Michael Haagman took of the duck -
The kingfishers are sitting on eggs at the moment! It's very exciting! Both the male and female kingfisher incubate the eggs, so a change over is when they swap, allowing one to go off and hunt while the other keeps the eggs warm!As they are incubating we won't see them as often as we have been. They will do a change over every two-three hours. If you would like to see the kingfishers a great time is when they are feeding the young - so keep your eyes pealed and I will let you know as soon as we see something!
