Hi everyone,

How are you today?

I thought I would let you know what has been about recently....

Do you remember the Love Passage Waders Challenge?
Well it is still going ahead, and we need you!

This is a competition between RSPB reserves to see who can spot the greatest range of passage wader species over the course of a year.  Prizes will be exciting and varied to the best reserves (inland sites v coastal, best visitor spectacle, best overall bird etc).  Prizes will be awarded at the 2012 Wardens' Gathering (the yearly meeting of reserve staff from around the country), with the best overall site being presented with the prestigious Golden Wellie  award.

We need you to tell us the wader species that you see, where, when, how many etc!

If you are interested this is what we saw in March have a look at this:
4 green sandpiper, 35 snipe, 33 lapwing, 1 jack snipe, 2 woodcock, 1 little ringed plover, and 1 redshank.

Keep your eyes pealed!

The kingfishers are sitting on eggs! Woohoo! The male and female kingfisher both incubate the eggs, so a change over is when they swap, allowing one to go off and hunt while the other keeps the eggs warm!
As they are incubating we won't see them as often as we have been. They will do a change over every two-three hours. If you would like to see the kingfishers a great time is when they are feeding the young - so keep your eyes pealed and I will let you know as soon as we see something!

On Monday we saw two peregrines, so do have a look on the pylons, you never know!

Keep an eye out for barn owls everyone! They are still about, and they might start coming out a bit earlier. If you do see them in the day time please can you let us know as many details as possible - where, when, and what they are doing. (We'll be having some more barn owl watches, so keep an eye on the website, I'll let you know!) There are tawny owls on site as well!

Soon the tern rafts will be going out on the lagoon again! The common terns are not around yet, but they soon will be. The lovely volunteers will be putting the rafts out ready for them.

:)
