Hi everyone,
So today we have a kingfisher day at the reserve - it's been going really well. We have staff and volunteers up at the kingfisher hide telling everyone what is going on, we've got a special kingfisher trail for children and colouring!
The kingfisher pair did their first change over at 10.30am, the female went out and off to fish, and the male went into the bank to do his stink incubating the eggs.
At about 11.30am a male appeared and was showing off for ten minutes, sitting in the trees and on the posts. At first we thought he was an interloper, but he then went into the bank! If he was a second male their would have been a bit of a barney, so he must of come out of the bank for a quick stretch of the wings!
We've had great views of other creatures too - there is a pair of kestrels using the box on the pylon that can be seen from the Kingfisher Hide. The male has been feeding the female, and they've been going into the boxes.
A pair of blue tits are using one of the holes in the kingfisher bank! The kingfisher obviously don't mind! There are loads of other little birds flying around all of the trees that can be seen from the Kingfisher hide so do keep your eyes pealed, I had great views of: black cap, reed bunting, wren, blackbird, chaffinch, greenfinch, blue tit, and great tit.
Over at the Draper hide there are two little egrets as well!
And there is a second pair of kingfishers using the other bank (over at the Tern hide)! It's all go!
