Bird sightings this bank holiday included: little egret, green sandpiper, house martin, lesser black-backed gull, teal, heron, greenshank, great spotted woodpecker, kestrel, sparrowhawk, common tern and kingfisher. The kingfisher family were very elusive this weekend but were sighted a couple of times yesterday- once in the morning and once again in the evening. As their chicks grow, hopefully we should see them out and about and fishing more!
Pond dipping took place on Sunday in the last part of our summer Give Nature a Home activities. We hope all the children enjoyed themselves and learnt lots of new things about nature.
But the stars of the weekend were the water voles! These came out every day, giving visitors great views and eating up every piece of fruit offered to them! Here is a picture taken by Julia Gregory.
Finally, news from our herd of Water Buffalo... we have had 2 calves born! One of the females went into labour on Sunday evening and by Monday morning we were watching them out together in the meadow. Then on Monday evening we had another birth with the calf getting up and suckling quickly. If anyone manages to get some nice pictures please let us know!
