A first for Rye Meads over the last couple of weeks! As we have seen the formation of a large gull (Herring, lesser and greater black back etc) roost from the Gadwall hide. This has coincided with the abandonment of HMWT Amwell by the large gull roost, which as drawn in some nice rarities such as caspian gull, so fingers crossed for us. Friday 19th evening roost consisted of 74 Great lack back, 110 Herring, 60 Lesser black back and 2 Yellow–legged Gulls (2nd w and 3rd w). Sightings of yellow legged gull have been frequent during the last few weeks from either the Tern or Gadwall hides.
Also about Saturday were 3 shelduck, green sandpiper, peregrine (looking very soggy on the pylon in the rain) redwing and water pipit.
The male kestrel does not seem to be enjoying this mornings snow, but the pair looks settled so fingers crossed for another successful breeding season for them in this box.
