These type of photos are becoming a common feature of 2014 so far. This morning it was blowing a SE force 9. Coupled with a high tide of 7.61m it made for quite a scene in the harbour
The harbour wall was built in the 1930's by Captain Whitehead the then owner of the island. He owned the Whiteheads steel works that were present across south Wales and put his engineering skills to the test out here.
The wall revolutionised access to the island and has stood the test of time since with some minor repairs along the way.
Today was another good test for it!
Water breaking over the back of the harbour wall at high tide this morning
This photo is for anyone who has sat on the harbour wall waiting for the boat to pick them up at the end of the day!
By now the rain was getting to the camera but this photo illustrates just how high the tide was - the Bitches were a raging cauldron but there was no way I was going down there to photograph them!
And here is a photo pre harbour wall from somtime around the early 1930's (courtesey of Ann Lockley)
