October is always an exciting month at coastal locations with birds on the move and so it has proved on Ramsey this year. A barred warbler on the 6th October was only the 9th record for Ramsey and the first since 2018. Since then we have had a flurry of good birds by island standards. A ruff found by warden Nia on 11th was only the 5th record for Ramsey while a green woodpecker on the same day was only the 4th record and the first since 2005. 4 mute swans on 13th are not a regular on the year list, a greenfinch on 14th sadly likewise these days. The first redwing of the autumn has been logged and today saw the first great spotted woodpecker of the year.
You never know what is around the corner as our friends on Skokholm discovered recently with their Tennessee warbler! http://skokholm.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-highlight-on-overcast-morning-was.html
With a few more weeks of the season to go we'll be keeping a keen out for something similar!
