Frosty Start at Ferry Field

As we see the year out the weather finally felt a little more winter like which seemed to herald the arrival of a few of the winter visitor that are hope for around the reserve. Ferry Pool has been filling up with birds over the last few weeks and there is a goose fest on the field. At first the number of Canada’s dominated the seen but soon 300 to 400 Dark Bellied Brent decided to join the party. After careful observation two Greylag’s were hiding amongst the growing flock and the gem in the crown was the discovery of a Tundra Bean Goose, a rare visitor to the Reserve. Just for good measure a brief appearance of a Juvenile European White Fronted Goose, a total of five geese species.

Although the geese stole the show out on Ferry Field there was an excellent supporting cast of 1000 Lapwing, 120 Black Tailed Godwit, 30 Curlew, up to 50 Golden Plover, 300 Wigeon, Shoveler, Shelduck, the flash of the Kingfisher and a Water Rail.

Redshank Feeding in the Mud

Out in the harbour the mudflats are filling up with Knot, Redshank, Dunlin and the occasional Bar-Tailed Godwit. The 3 Spoonbill continue there vigil over Tern Island. But do not forget the hedgerows as there is still a lot of activity during the cold weather as the small birds continuously feed to keep warm, Firecrest, Long-Tailed Tit and the occasional Chiffchaff are regularly reported.
