This week saw the migration start in ernest with a continuous stream of Sand Martins, House Martins, Swallows and the last of the Swifts all heading south. In the bushes many of the common migrants are filling them up to take advantage of the berries and insects that are in abundance at the present. Whitethroats, Spotted Flycatcher, Redstarts, Garden Warblers and Willow Warblers have all been seen in large numbers.

Out on the spit Wheatears and Whinchat run over the shingle having one final refill before the onward journey on to the continent. If you are lucky you may well see an Osprey, Hen Harrier or Short-eared Owl moving southwards.

Amongst the cattle, Yellow Wagtail take advantage of the insects disturbed as they dance between flailing feet.

Birds are not the only migrants many insects are on the move. In the warm afternoon keep an eye open for Migrant Hawkers and Clouded Yellows as they take in the last rays of the summer sun. But beware if a Hummingbird you think you see, then take a closer look as it is not a bird but a moth.
