I‘m pleased to announce that after weeks of hard work the Tuesday volunteer team have (almost) finished building the viewing screen on the southern edge of the reedbed. It still needs a few finishing touches, but the team put in a few hours overtime this week and got the floor laid so visitors can now make use of this great wildlife viewing area. With the reedbed in front of the screen and the lizard hotel and a newly opened up view over Big Otmoor behind it, the screen will provide a real focal point on the reserve.

Once the thick mist had cleared, walking up to the reedbed yesterday evening provided an amazing wildlife experience. Lapwing, redshank and curlew were displaying and calling. A massive flock of golden plover with a few dunlin thrown in for good measure, wheeled overhead, glinting in the sunlight. Three little egrets flew past and a hen harrier was hunting over Greenaways. I heard at least four water rails squealing and there were a couple of pairs of pintails on the reedbed. A barn owl was hunting up near the second viewing screen and a sparrowhawk burst out of the reeds with prey in its talons.
