Ignoring the fact that it's pouring with rain at the moment, now is a good time of year to see lots of interesting insects on the moor. Local birder/photographer Peter Coombes recently took the photos below of some amazing looking lackey moth caterpillars. Once the lackey moth eggs have hatched the emerging caterpillars create a silken tent to protect themselves, they then start feeding until they've reached a certain size and can leave the safety of this tent and start crawling further afield looking for more leaves to eat. The caterpillars mainly focus on hawthorn and blackthorn but do eat other shrubs too. The actual adult lackey moths only live for a day though, so you'll be lucky to see one.
Birds are often the most obvious animals on the moor, but it's well worth keeping your eyes open to see what else is about.
