Prior to the start of The Loons Hide session, I was fortunate to have a group of several hundred Golden Plovers by the roadside at HY249245, amongst them was a juvenile American Golden Plover. Unfortunately the flock was disturbed by cow herding going on nearby... During the Loons session there must have been 3000ish plus Golden Plover in the area, a fantastic sight - Best of luck...!

On arrival at the hide 30 Snipe were probing away on the shore just in front of the hide, as soon as I opened a window...whooosh they were gone, although birds coming and going all the time. RSPB Staff have spent a couple of days tweaking the view in front of the hide to enable Water Rail sightings and I am pleased to say that birds were seen (more were heard) today as a result of those efforts. No better time to see Water Rail than now at The Loons, especially in the cut channels opposite the hide with the specially designed Water Rail bridges to aid observations of this skulky reedbed dweller.

Male & female Hen Harriers recorded, a female Merlin seen three times and a Kestrel frequently hovering over the site added to the occasion. Other birds seen; Grey Heron, Gadwall, Mallard, Teal, Curlew, Lapwing, Skylark and Twite over head
.

Any day now the Greenland White-fronted Geese will be back on show.

Cheers Al
