At this time of year, the wetland birds that visit Northward Hill are beginning to get a little more interesting and varied. Some of the birds noted by the team and members of the public include:

  • Green Sandpiper
  • Common Sandpiper
  • Wood Sandpiper
  • Greylag Geese
  • Avocet
  • Lapwing
  • Heron
  • Little Egret
  • Pochard
  • Little Ringed Plover

Other birds recorded include Green Woodpecker, Little Owl, Tawny Owl, Collard Dove, Turtle Dove, Robin, Blue-tit, Chaffinch, Goldfinch and Canada Geese.

Sightings of the Ruddy Darter, Red Admiral, Small Copper, Common Blue, Large White and Painted Lady all make the wildlife here more exciting. A moth trap set last week collected a Burnished Bronze and White Ware amongst others.

Finally, a rather interesting observation. Sitting at the Ernie Viewpoint, a Badger came plodding along right past us, quite happily, before reaching under a bush and grabbing a rabbit, before retreating under a small Hawthorne to crunch away on it.
