Homes England, who currently own and maintain the disused Army Depot in Chattenden, have recently announced they have scaled back their plans to build houses on the site. It was you will remember initially going to be 5,000 when it was owned by Land Securities, they then pulled out and H E took over and announced it was to be 2,000, some of which would be on the S.S.S.I. and hugely threaten the wildlife, not least of which included the Nightingales.
So now the plan is for a more modest 500 dwellings, none to be on the S.S.S.I (Site of Special Scientific Interest). This is extremely good news and I look forward to any future plans for the protection of this nationally important site. I would like to give a personal thank you to all those thousands of people who wrote to Medway Council expressing their dismay at the plan to build on the site.
The North Kent Marshes are a very special area and worth preserving at all cost.
