Newport Wetlands Book Club

We’ve got a team of avid readers here at Newport Wetlands, so for this special edition of our blog, we thought we’d take a look at some recommendations from our staff and volunteers!

All the books recommended are available in our shop, so why not pop in next time you visit to have a browse?

We also run a second-hand book section called Book Cycle, with all donations from sales going directly towards the reserve. We’re always grateful for any good quality book donations - just drop them into the shop on your next visit!

  1. Features of the Gwent Levels ID Guide, recommended by our Binocular & Telescope Expert, Mike

“Are you – like me – interested in trying to spot as many varieties of animal, bird, and plant as possible? This pocket-sized and weather-proof ID chart is so useful for on-the-go identification, especially around the reserve, and when I visit places like Goldcliff Lagoons with my telescope.”

  1. Entangled Life by Melvin Sheldrake, recommended by our shop manager, Sarah

“I’ve always been intrigued by fungi! There are more than 15,000 species in the UK, growing on all sorts of things in all sorts of places. Have you heard of the Wood Wide Web? This secret underground world is a communication network between trees and fungi – they share nutrients and pass gossip between the trees. Melvin Sheldrake, as well as having a brilliant name, writes with beautiful and engaging style, taking you on a fascinating adventure into the weird and wonderful world of fungi.”

  1. Rewild Your Garden by Frances Tophill recommended by our Visitor Experience Assistant Josh

“I am landscaping my garden and it has been an enormous help, guiding me in making it a wildlife haven as well as making it a lovely place to watch the world go by. It is full of helpful tips such as creating a pond and recommending the right plants to use. One of my favourite parts is the ‘Unsung Heroes’ pages spread throughout the book highlighting different species and why they are important. The illustrations make it a thoroughly enjoyable read.”

  1. Etta Lemon by Tesse Boase, recommended by our Visitor Engagement Volunteer, Rob

“An amazing story of the birth of the RSPB. You will realise how high fashion nearly destroyed some of our best-loved birds.”

  1. My Nature Trail by Rachel and Paul Lawston recommended by our Education Officer, Carolyn

“I am lucky to spend my life teaching children all about nature. I love this book! It’s just full of great nature activities and learning for every season. It tells children what to look out for, identification of animals, plants, fungi, butterflies, bugs, and ideas for making a bug hotel, a bird feeder, and so much more! Hours of fun for any young nature lover!”
