As summer hours drift by,

And fledglings start to roam,

Sun leaves its place on high,

And swallows head for home,

Then, autumn starts to stir,

And raises its weary head,

Painting colours in a blur,

Brown, orange, gold, and red.

Newport Wetlands is alive!

Plenty for schools to do,

Whether dancing the bumblebee jive,

Or checking for tracks and poo!

Dragonflies on final flights,

Fish between the reeds,

And nymphs you still may sight,

As they hide amongst the weeds.

Woodlice under logs,

Slugs, slither, slime, and slide,

Food for hungry ‘hogs,

That in hedges must abide,

To flee hard winter’s bite,

Getting ready to hibernate,

Though birds of sun take flight,

And to warmer climes migrate.

Predators chase prey,

Frogs struggle to survive,

As the deadly game they play,

From herons they must dive.

Protect, compare and contrast,

Habitats and special features,

While surviving the icy blast,

Life cycles on for our creatures.

So, why not bring your class?

Make a collage, or use your senses,

As the starling skies amass,

Come outdoors, remove the fences!

Explore, identify, and match,

And discover hidden treasures,

Look in wonder at their catch,

And watch faces grin with pleasure.
