Did you know that 28 species of whales and dolphins can be seen around the UK? Several species are recorded annually from the Mull of Galloway so this Wednesday (29.07.15) the RSPB are taking part in the Seawatch Foundation’s National Whale and Dolphin Watch. This week long study will help create a snapshot of whale and dolphin distribution around the UK and will contribute to 13 years worth of data.

Porpoise are a common sight around the reserve, often spotted feeding in the tidal race which runs around the cliffs. Minke whales are spotted each year and if we are lucky- a fin whale or even killer whales may make an appearance. With flat seas and a bit of luck- you never know what we may find! Feeding gannets, manx shearwaters and skuas patrol the coastline between the reserve and the Isle of Man so there is always something to see.

If you are interested in taking part and learning more about our native whales and dolphins, meet us at the RSPB visitor centre at 11am. Bring warm clothes and a telescope or binoculars if you have some.
