Mersehead Recent Sightings 11th - 17th February

Spring is showing signs here at Mersehead, with snowdrops appearing at the Visitor Centre feeding station, sightings of Ravens performing their mating flights and the slightly warmer weather.

Apart from the Ravens twirling away in the February sky, there have been sightings at Mersehead and Kirkconnell  of........

247 Wigeon, 151 Pintail, 404 Lapwings, 274 Teal and at Kirkconnell, a total of 1574 Barnacle Geese.

Around the reserve, the murmurations have continued on a nightly basis with a rough estimate of 60,000 Starlings appearing on the evening of 14th February at about 5pm. There were a few heart shaped flocks that night!!

On the night of the 12th a Peregrine Falcon was seen to attack the murmuration, but to no avail.

Other species were seen around the reserve this week are a female and male Hen Harrier, a Little Egret and 5 Whooper Swans paying us a visit.
